Mary's Meals
SIR is providing Mary’s Meals in 2 locations in Haiti:
Maison Fortune Orphanage, Hinche
Hinche is a town 3 hours drive from the capital Port-au-Prince. The roads are poor and the most common form of transport is the donkey. Maison Fortune Orphanage was established in 2000 and is home to 88 boys. The orphanage includes a school which is open to boys and girls from the area from severely poor backgrounds. Hunger is the main obstacle to education for these children. This Mary’s Meals project is providing 135 children attending the school with a daily meal of rice, beans, seasonal vegetable and chicken or fish.
Cite Soleil
Cite Soleil is a slum area of Port-au-Prince on the edge of the Carribean Sea. The people who live there are crammed into flimsy, over-crowded, filthy hovels with no access to potable water, sanitation or many of the most basic human requirements. The slum is run by armed gangs and the area is extremely volatile. There is widespread hunger and malnutrition especially amongst the children. The Mary’s Meals projects here are run in conjunction with Hands Together (a US organisation) that operates 7 schools in the township. The meals served here will be another incentive to families to send their children to school regularly. They are also a source of hope in a community suffering in so many ways. This work is made possible by the generous support of IAMCO
Rural Schools
Many more schools have asked for Mary’s Meals and as more funds become available we will begin Mary’s Meals in other schools in rural areas. The hope is that if conditions are improved for children and their families in the countryside then they will not be forced into leaving for the cities where even more problems await them.
