EMERGENCY APPEAL

SIR's emergency relief work is underway in the Western Kenyan town of Kisii, and has been expanded to support displaced people arriving in Kisumu, one of the areas worst affected by recent violence.  Many are women and children who have been forced to flee their homes and seek the relative safety of police station and church property.  Charles Chuma, our relief co-ordinator, informs us that:

'SIR's current emergency relief has given enough stock for the coming 3 weeks and over for the internally displaced people in Kisii.  Everybody here is very thankful for giving them hope for the future'.

Charles Chuma is now co-ordinating our extended relief effort to Kisumu to reach around 4000 displaced people, and we will be reviewing the situation over the coming days to assess what further help may be required. To find out more read the press release here

A donation of £10 will provide a family

Mary's Meals
We are providing Mary’s Meals to 1900 children in nurseries and schools run by the Diocese of Lodwar in the Turkana region of Kenya.  The Diocese runs most of the healthcare and educational facilities in this very remote area that is home to the Turkana.

These nursery centres offer an introduction to: maths, English, music, personal hygiene and tree planting/gardening activities.
The aim is to give the children a taste for learning and make attendance at primary school more likely.

Mary’s Meals in this setting is similar to the Under 5’s Centres in Malawi.  The children are given both porridge (Unimix) and one ‘strong’ meal that will consist of rice and beans and vegetables when available.  This stew will take around 2-3 hours to cook.
The mothers take it in turn to prepare the food.

Country background:
Although Kenya has enjoyed greater political stability than many other African countries and its spectacular wildlife and scenery make it a popular western tourist destination the majority (60%) of its population live on less than $2 a day.  A long running drought means millions of Kenyans require food aid.
