Education is central to reducing poverty – its affects leads to better health, better farming and a better quality of life.

SIR has received great support from schools throughout the UK, and we are always open to new school support. We have a number of projects that engage pupils in the UK to help their counterparts around the world.

You can download Back Pack and Mary's Meals posters, images and leaflets from the Resources area at the bottom of the page.

If you would like any information about getting your school involved please call Andrew on 0800 698 1212 or email

School Support

We all know how tough it can be to work all day at school – so we don’t just give the children a backpack and forget about them.  We also make sure they are getting a meal every morning, so when they go to school they have enough energy to learn all day, and look forward to each school day without fear of hunger.  This project, called Mary’s Meals, is also encouraging pupils to attend school, to see their friends and to learn.

The Backpack Project was started to help children in poverty attend school and learn.  Many children around the world, especially in Africa, don’t have any jotters, pens, pencils to learn with at school, or even soap and a toothbrush to get ready for the day.  Some don’t have even a change of T-shirt to wear.  It means that many don’t go to school, and stay at home to help their parents collect water, or firewood, or grow vegetables.

Many children in Malawi, in south-east Africa, would love to go to school but need basic things to help them learn.  Secondary school is not free in countries like Malawi – most children have to start working when they leave primary school – we want their time there to be a good as possible.
